What Are We Actually Talking About Here
What's new is this second loop running alongside it. AI SEO vs traditional SEO isn't really a versus situation - it's more like you've been optimizing for one audience (Google's crawler), and now there's a second audience you also need to think about (AI systems that synthesize answers).
AEO in marketing is just the name for that second optimization layer. When someone asks ChatGPT something relevant to your business, and ChatGPT references your brand or pulls an explanation from your content, that's AEO doing its job. No click required. The exposure still happened.
The goal is different from traditional SEO, though. Traditional SEO wants you ranked in a list. AEO wants you to be chosen as the answer. Those two things require genuinely different content decisions.
Why First-Page Rankings Don't Tell the Whole Story Anymore
So you can be ranked #1 and still lose to the AI box above you. That's a new problem that didn't exist before.
The flip side is interesting, though. Brands that are further down page one, sometimes further down page two, are getting pulled into AI-generated answers because their content is structured in a way that's easy for AI to extract and trust. They're getting brand exposure without the ranking. A year ago, that would've sounded backwards.
The teams doing B2B content strategy for AI search have figured this out faster than most. They've stopped obsessing over word count and started obsessing over whether the first two sentences of each section actually answer the question being asked. Smaller change than it sounds. Bigger impact than most people expect.
